Lodging Near Glacier National Park

Lodging near Glacier National Park falls into three groups: the historic lodges, motor inns and backcountry chalets inside the park; hotels and cabins in gateway communities at the park's edge; and whole homes in the Flathead Valley, where groups have kitchens, space and a single address. Inside the park, rooms are limited and seasonal, and NPS describes Glacier as "an extremely busy national park" where planning ahead and making reservations matter (NPS). This guide covers how each option works and who it suits.

Can you stay inside Glacier National Park?

Yes. NPS lists three lodging operators inside the park (NPS lodging, restaurants and services):

Operator Lodging inside the park Book through
Glacier National Park Lodges (Xanterra) Village Inn at Apgar, Lake McDonald Lodge, Rising Sun Motor Inn & Cabins, Swiftcurrent Motor Inn & Cabins, Many Glacier Hotel glaciernationalparklodges.com
Glacier Park Collection (Pursuit) Apgar Village Lodge, Motel Lake McDonald glacierparkcollection.com
Belton Chalets, Inc. Sperry Chalet and Granite Park Chalet, backcountry chalets reached only on foot or horseback sperrychalet.com and graniteparkchalet.com

Xanterra describes its room types on its FAQ page: suites, hotel rooms, cabins and dormitories at Lake McDonald Lodge; suites, lakeside and parkside rooms and family units at Many Glacier Hotel; motel rooms, family units and kitchenette rooms at Village Inn at Apgar; and motor inn rooms and cabins at Rising Sun and Swiftcurrent, including Swiftcurrent cabins with shared bathrooms.

How do Glacier National Park lodging reservations work?

For the Xanterra lodges, the Glacier National Park Lodges FAQ sets out the basics:

For Apgar Village Lodge and Motel Lake McDonald, book directly with Glacier Park Collection.

Backcountry chalets. Sperry Chalet and Granite Park Chalet require reservations and advance payment. Both are reached only by trail, and both have rustic facilities: Sperry's private rooms have no electricity, heat or running water, and Granite Park guests cook their own meals and bring or buy their water (Sperry Chalet; Granite Park Chalet). For summer 2027, the chalets say they will pilot a reservation lottery system, with details and dates to be announced on their websites this fall.

Camping. NPS lists 13 campgrounds with about 1,009 sites (NPS).

Do you need a vehicle reservation for Glacier in 2027?

NPS has not published 2027 rules. Vehicle reservations were not required in 2026, when the park piloted a ticketed-only shuttle system and three-hour timed parking at Logan Pass (NPS vehicle reservations). Check that page before you travel, whatever kind of lodging you book.

What about gateway towns?

Lodging also sits just outside the park boundary. Glacier Park Collection operates properties in West Glacier, St. Mary and East Glacier, among others (Glacier Park Collection), and NPS notes that private businesses offer lodging, groceries, restaurants and other services just outside the park, many only in summer (NPS).

Gateway lodging puts you close to an entrance. The trade-off for groups is the same as in the park: separate rooms, limited kitchens and seasonal services.

Why base a group in the Flathead Valley?

Flathead Valley towns have grocery stores, restaurants and whole homes with full kitchens. Kalispell, Whitefish and Columbia Falls sit between the Flathead Lake area and the park's west side. Glacier Park International Airport (FCA) in Kalispell is about 30 miles from the West Entrance, according to Glacier National Park Lodges. The valley base matters most outside summer: NPS says most lodging and dining in the park close for the winter season (NPS winter).
