Blacktail Mountain vs. Whitefish Mountain Resort: a Flathead ski guide

Two ski areas, very different days. The right one depends on your group.

The short answer

How Blacktail Mountain and Whitefish Mountain Resort differ for a group ski trip in the Flathead Valley, and how to choose between them.

  • Whitefish Mountain Resort: the valley's large destination resort above Whitefish.
  • Blacktail Mountain: a smaller, family-oriented area above Lakeside and Flathead Lake.
  • Blacktail's unusual layout: you drive up and the lodge sits at the top.
  • Season dates, lift tickets and hours are set by each mountain — check their sites.

Whitefish Mountain Resort

Whitefish Mountain Resort on Big Mountain is the Flathead Valley's major ski destination, with a large lift network and a full base village above the town of Whitefish. It suits mixed-ability groups who want variety, après-ski and the town's restaurants.

The resort publishes its season dates; for 2026–27 it lists a December 4, 2026 to April 4, 2027 season, subject to conditions. Lift-ticket pricing and products are on its own site.

Blacktail Mountain Ski Area

Blacktail Mountain sits above Lakeside on the west side of Flathead Lake. It is smaller and generally quieter, with a reputation as a family-friendly hill. Its layout is unusual: you drive up the mountain road, and the lodge and parking are at the top, so the skiing is downhill from the lodge.

Operating days and hours are set by the ski area each season; check its site before you go.

How to choose

Choose Whitefish if your group wants the biggest terrain, ski school options at a large resort, and town nightlife. Choose Blacktail for a relaxed day, learners and families, or when you want to stay on the lake side of the valley.

Many groups do both: a big day at Whitefish and an easier day at Blacktail.

Winter driving

Mountain roads can be snow-covered. Check Montana Department of Transportation road conditions, carry appropriate tires or chains as advised, and look at your route in Google Maps on the morning you go rather than relying on a typical drive time.

Where to stay for a ski trip

The Tamarack is in Lakeside, the town below Blacktail. The Evergreen is in Somers at the north end of Flathead Lake. Both have six bedrooms, a hot tub and a sauna for after the hill, and The Tamarack lists snowshoes in winter, subject to conditions.
