Things to do in Whitefish, MT: summer and winter

Whitefish changes completely between July and January. Groups need to know which version of the town they are visiting.

The short answer

Whitefish Lake, City Beach, the Whitefish Trail, Whitefish Mountain Resort and a lively downtown — a year-round plan for groups visiting Whitefish.

  • Summer: Whitefish Lake and City Beach, the Whitefish Trail, and resort summer activities.
  • Winter: skiing and riding at Whitefish Mountain Resort on Big Mountain.
  • Year-round: downtown Whitefish for dining, shops and evenings out.
  • Amtrak's Empire Builder stops at the historic Whitefish depot.
  • Check the resort and city sites for current season dates.

Downtown Whitefish

Downtown Whitefish is small, walkable and busy in both peak seasons, with restaurants, bars, galleries and outdoor shops along Central Avenue and the surrounding blocks. It is an easy evening for a group that wants to go out without a long drive between stops.

The historic Whitefish train depot is still an active Amtrak stop on the Empire Builder route and houses a small local museum. Check Amtrak for schedules if anyone is arriving by rail.

Summer: the lake and the trail

Whitefish Lake sits on the edge of town. City Beach is the public swimming and picnic spot, and local outfitters typically rent paddleboards, kayaks and boats in summer — confirm availability and terms with them directly.

The Whitefish Trail is a network of trails around the lake and the surrounding forest, with multiple trailheads. It suits everyone from walkers to mountain bikers; maps and trail updates are on the trail's official site.

In summer, Whitefish Mountain Resort has typically offered scenic lift rides and other activities at the top of Big Mountain. Operating dates vary by year; check the resort's own site.

Winter: Whitefish Mountain Resort

Whitefish Mountain Resort is the area's main ski area, with terrain across Big Mountain above town and views toward Glacier National Park on clear days. Opening and closing dates depend on snow and are announced by the resort.

For a comparison with the smaller, quieter Blacktail Mountain near Lakeside, see our Blacktail vs Whitefish ski guide. Winter driving in northwest Montana needs care; check road conditions before heading up the mountain road.

Spring and fall

The shoulder seasons are quieter. Fall brings golden larches on the surrounding hillsides, and late spring is good for low-elevation trails once they dry out. Some seasonal businesses keep shorter hours, so check before you go.

Where to stay for Whitefish days

Trailstead's Montana homes sit farther south in the valley, near Flathead Lake, which suits groups who want Whitefish, Kalispell, the lake and Glacier all in reach rather than staying in town. Check the drive in Google Maps from the links below.

The Tamarack (Lakeside) and The Evergreen (Somers) each have six bedrooms, a private hot tub and a sauna. Neither home includes private, deeded or direct lake access, a boat, dock or slip. Guest limits, dates and the full stay total are confirmed on each home's own booking page.
