Book direct: how booking on the official calendar differs from Airbnb

The same home can appear on several sites. It helps to know what actually differs.

The short answer

What changes when you book a Trailstead home on its official calendar instead of a marketplace: no marketplace service fee from a third party, a direct line to the host, and the home's own total.

  • Booking direct means using each home's official Trailstead booking page.
  • No third-party marketplace adds its own guest service fee on that page.
  • You talk to the host team directly, before and after you book.
  • The official calendar shows the home's own dates, total and policies.

What booking direct means here

Each Trailstead home has an official booking page. When you book there, your reservation is made with the host's own booking system rather than through a marketplace such as Airbnb or Vrbo.

This page is not a price promise. We do not claim a discount or a lower rate. What changes is who sits between you and the host.

Marketplace service fees

Marketplaces fund themselves partly through fees, and depending on the platform and listing, a guest service fee may appear at checkout. Those fee structures are set by each marketplace and change over time, so check the checkout breakdown on any site you compare.

On the official booking page there is no third-party marketplace adding its own guest service fee. The home's own charges — such as nightly rate, cleaning and taxes — are shown in the total on that page.

A direct line to the host

Large groups tend to have questions: sleeping arrangements, arrival logistics, house rules for visitors. Booking direct means those conversations happen with the host team, not through a platform's messaging layer.

You can ask a planning question before you book. An inquiry is not a hold, and the booking page — not this site — confirms availability and guest limits.

Policies come from the official page

Cancellation terms, minimum stays, deposits and guest limits are shown on each home's booking page at the time you book. Read them there; this page does not summarise or promise any policy.

How to compare fairly

Use the same dates and the same number of guests on each site, then compare the final total at checkout — not the nightly headline. Note any differences in cancellation terms, because a slightly different total can come with very different flexibility.

Frequently asked questions

Is booking direct cheaper than Airbnb?

We don't promise a lower price. Compare the final total for the same dates and guests; the official page has no third-party marketplace fee added.
