Planning a long day
Both Sedona and the Grand Canyon are a substantial drive north of Scottsdale on Interstate 17 and beyond. Rather than trusting a number from us, open the Google Maps links below on the morning you go, and check Arizona 511 for closures and weather — northern Arizona can be cold or snowy when Scottsdale is warm.
Leave early, plan food and fuel stops, and agree on a turnaround time so drivers are not tired on the way back.
Sedona
Sedona is known for its red rock formations, trails and scenic drives, and for its uptown shops and restaurants. Popular trailheads fill early, and parking at some sites in the surrounding Coconino National Forest requires a Red Rock Pass or other recreation pass — check the Forest Service's current rules.
Visit Sedona publishes current information on shuttles, trail etiquette and parking.
Grand Canyon South Rim
The South Rim is the most visited part of Grand Canyon National Park and is open year-round. As a same-day trip from Scottsdale it is a very long day, so many groups choose to stay overnight near the park. Entrance fees, shuttle routes and any closures are listed on the NPS site.
Stops along the way
Montezuma Castle National Monument preserves cliff dwellings near Camp Verde and makes a natural stop on the way to Sedona. Closer to Scottsdale, Taliesin West and the McDowell Sonoran Preserve make good shorter outings.
Where to stay between day trips
A Scottsdale base lets the group alternate long day trips with pool and rest days.
The Sunkiss and The Scottsdale Social each have five bedrooms, a private pool, a hot tub and a putting green. The Sunkiss adds a sport court set up for pickleball and basketball; The Scottsdale Social adds 15+ indoor games and lawn games. Guest limits, dates and the full stay total are confirmed on each home's own booking page.
